Words written in bold are when the leader is speaking. Feel free to use your own words.
ACTIVITY #1: In an age appropriate Bible, invite a volunteer to read the story of Noah and the ark. Explain that you are going to build an ark for your family. Leader, use the utility knife to cut an opening on the top of the box for the hatch and a door to swing open on one side. Small windows may also be cut. Using the markers or paint, decorate the box to look like a big boat. You may want to add blue for water at the bottom of the boat. Allow time for the markers and paint to dry.
B. ACTIVITY #2: Have the children collect all their stuffed animals and put them into the ark. The children can climb into the box with their stuffed animals and make animal sounds.Pretend the ark is in a rainstorm by rocking the box back and forth while the children drum their fingers on the inside of the box to make the sound of rain falling. You might flash the lights on and off or use water squirters to shower the children with rain.
C. After playing these games, discussion the story of Noah. How did you feel as we were building the ark? It was fun. Bible teachers estimate it took Noah at least 55 years and maybe 100 years to build the ark. How do you think he felt? Tired. Like it would never be over. He may have enjoyed it because he was obeying God. What do you think it was like for Noah and his family to live on the ark for a whole year? Bored. Busy taking care of the animals. Crowded, loud and smelly. Claustrophobic. What would have happened to Noah and his family if they hadn’t obeyed God and built the ark? They would have drowned in the water. There wouldn’t be any people or animals left today. What does this story tell us about obeying God? It is important to obey God.
